Biography

Dr. Xiomara Sanchez-Castillo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of New Brunswick. She holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Waterloo, obtained in 2014, and a Master of Applied Science (MASc) and Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) in Civil Engineering from the University of Los Andes, awarded in 2007 and 2004 respectively. Her research primarily focuses on sustainable pavement practices, specifically the use of recycled materials in road construction. Dr. Sanchez is actively engaged in developing research programs that study the effective use of waste by-product materials in pavements, including reclaimed asphalt pavement, asphalt shingles, and post-consumer plastics. She is also exploring the modification of asphalt with biomaterials to enhance its performance. In recognition of her contributions to the field, she has received several awards, including the Mitacs Research Training Award in 2020 and the Harrison McCain Foundation Young Scholars Award in 2017. She is a member of the Academy of Pavement Science Engineering (APSE) and the Canadian Technical Asphalt Association (CTAA).
