Biography

Xiong Gu is a multimedia artist and Professor in the Department of Art History, Visual Art & Theory at the University of British Columbia. He holds both a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in China. His work spans various mediums including installation, painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, photography, and performance art. Gu has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally with over sixty solo exhibitions and participation in numerous group exhibitions, such as the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale and the Vancouver Art Gallery. His public art commissions include significant projects in Canada and the United States. Beyond visual art, Gu contributes to academic literature, having published several books and exhibition catalogues. His artistic practice investigates themes of hybrid identity and the integration of cultural origins, addressing issues of migration, globalization, and identity politics. Gu is also actively involved in mentorship, having served on various juries for visual arts grants in Canada.
