Biography

Xue Sherry Gao joined the University of Pennsylvania as an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, with a joint appointment in the Department of Bioengineering, starting in January 2024. She is also a core faculty member at Penn's Center for Precision Engineering for Health. Prior to her current role, Dr. Gao was an Assistant Professor at Rice University in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering starting in July 2017. Her research focuses on interactions in biomolecular engineering, biochemistry, and chemical biology, primarily aimed at advancements in small and large molecules for human health. Dr. Gao's lab is dedicated to the development of highly specific and potent genome-editing tools, with broad applications in disease treatment and diagnostics, and the exploration of novel small-molecule drugs. Her work is at the forefront of engineering precision multiplex CRISPR genome-editing techniques and viral detection systems. Dr. Gao earned her Ph.D. in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2013 and pursued postdoctoral research at Harvard University's Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.
