Biography

Xueguang Zhou is the Kwoh-Ting Li Professor of Sociology and a Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University. His primary research focuses on institutional changes in contemporary Chinese society, emphasizing management within Chinese organizations, social inequality, and state-society relationships. Zhou engages in participatory observations to analyze government behaviors in areas such as environmental regulation and policy implementation. His research also explores patterns of career mobility within government institutions, delving into intra-organizational dynamics of Chinese bureaucracy. Currently, he is conducting an ethnographic study examining rural governance in China, employing a micro-level approach to unravel the interactions among peasants, village cadres, and local governments as they seek solutions to daily challenges. Zhou's notable publications include analyses of governance modes in Chinese bureaucracy and the relationship between central authorities and local bureaucratic practices. He holds a PhD in Sociology from Stanford University, awarded in 1991, and has held teaching positions at Cornell University, Duke University, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Furthermore, he has been a guest professor at several prestigious universities in China.
