Dr. Yair Argon

Biography

Yair Argon is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the Hebrew University Medical School in Jerusalem, Israel, in 1974 and earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Harvard Medical School in 1980. Argon completed a fellowship in Molecular Biology at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK, in 1984. His research focuses on molecular chaperones and their role in protein folding and cellular stress response. Argon's work is significant in understanding how molecular chaperones like BiP and GRP94 regulate the biosynthesis and secretion of proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum, with implications in proper receptor function and tissue organization. He has explored the mode of action of GRP94 in muscle physiology and has developed assays to examine the interactions of ER chaperones. His expertise includes investigating the mechanisms behind misfolded proteins and their implications for diseases like amyloidosis. Argon has published extensively on these topics and continues to contribute to the field of biomedical science.
