Yaliang Chuang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial Design at Eindhoven University of Technology. His research focuses on the design of systems for smart things, particularly in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT). With the rise of smart products, he investigates how the increasing number of connected devices can disrupt users' everyday lives while also providing advanced functionalities. Yaliang aims to explore design languages for smart products that could convey necessary information to users in a direct and intuitive manner. In a recent paper, he applied Disney animation principles to develop lighting and acoustic accompaniments for LED speakers. The results showed that the designs could express the intents of smart devices and systems in an intuitive and unobtrusive way. Over the years, Yaliang has co-founded the International Journal of Design and continues to serve as its Managing Editor, promoting high-quality research in the design community through global research databases such as Web Science, SCOPUS, and EBSCO Host. Yaliang received his BSc in Industrial Design from National Cheng Kung University and his MSc from National Chiao Tung University, both in Taiwan, before earning his PhD from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology in 2007. He previously worked as a researcher and interaction designer at Philips in Taiwan, led a UX design team at the Industrial Technology Research Institute, and was involved in projects at the Intel-NTU Connected Context Computing Center.
