Biography

Dr. Liu, a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) since 2013 and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) since 2018, earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Electrical Engineering from Zhejiang University, China in 1984 and 1987 respectively. He obtained his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Queen's University in Kingston, Canada in 1994. He served as a Technical Advisor for the Advanced Power System Division at Nortel Networks from 1994 to 1999, and has been a Professor at Queen’s University since 1999. His research focuses on Power Electronics, particularly the use of Gallium Nitride (GaN) and Silicon Carbide (SiC) devices in high-efficiency power converters. He has authored over 300 technical papers and holds 75 U.S. patents. His work has included significant advancements in DC-DC converters, power factor correction technologies, and the development of efficient EV battery chargers. His contributions to IEEE are substantial, including roles such as Vice President of Technical Operations of the Power Electronics Society and serving as the General Chair for the ECCE conference in 2019.
