Yan Wang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Toronto. His research focuses on genomic evolution in fungi, with a particular interest in understanding the genetic makeup of fungal symbionts adapted to host environments across evolutionary timescales. His laboratory employs modern genomic approaches alongside traditional phylogenetic methods to explore areas such as adaptation, evolution, and host-microbe interactions. Currently, his research projects include assembling high-quality fungal genomes using long-read sequencing data, developing phylogenomic markers for molecular systematics of early-diverging fungi, investigating the population genomic structure of insect-associated fungi, and examining experimental evolution in gene expression preferences of insect gut-dwelling fungi. Yan is dedicated to advancing the field of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and is open to accepting new graduate students into his lab. He encourages prospective students to contact him with a recent CV and a brief research statement outlining their interests and experience.
