Dr. Yana Kamberov

Biography

Yana G. Kamberov is an Associate Professor in the Department of Genetics at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. Her research focuses on molecular and cellular mechanisms of human skin appendage development, evolution, and regeneration, employing classical developmental genetics and high-throughput transcriptomics. Kamberov leads a lab dedicated to understanding evolutionary adaptations of human skin and aims to translate these insights into therapeutic strategies for regenerating critical skin derivatives, such as sweat glands and hair follicles. Her work includes investigations into niche/progenitor interactions and the role of enhancer biology in skin appendage development. Kamberov has a strong background in genetics and has held various significant positions, including core membership in the Skin Biology Disease Research Center and the Diabetes Research Center at the University of Pennsylvania. She completed her Ph.D. in Cell and Developmental Biology at Harvard University, where she also undertook postdoctoral training, further enhancing her expertise in genetics and human evolutionary biology.
