Biography

Yana Skorobogatov is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Columbia University, specializing in Russian and Soviet history. Her research focuses on the late post-Soviet periods and includes a book in progress about the history of the death penalty movement in Russia and the Soviet Union, drawing on records of over 100 death penalty cases from the post-Stalin era to explore changing popular perceptions of the late Soviet state and Joseph Stalin’s legacy following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Additionally, her research interests extend to political-economic history, environmental history, and the legacies of Russian and Soviet imperialism. She is currently in the early stages of writing a book centered on the Russian island of Sakhalin, which emerged as a major epicenter of global oil extraction after the Soviet Union's dissolution.
