Biography

Professor Yang Shao-Horn studies materials for electrochemical and photoelectrochemical energy storage and conversion. Her research exploits the physical chemistries of materials to understand and control the kinetics and dynamics of electron storage, which is critical for enabling clean energy solutions that mitigate climate change. She develops universal design principles for materials to enhance their functions across various applications, including sustainable chemicals, fuels, and rechargeable lithium-ion and lithium-air batteries. Professor Shao-Horn received her BS in metallurgical materials engineering from Beijing University of Technology in 1992 and her PhD from Michigan Technological University in 1998. Prior to joining MIT in 2002, she was a staff scientist at Eveready Battery Company in Westlake, Ohio, where she researched various types of battery materials. She has received a National Science Foundation International Research Fellowship to work with Claude Delmas at the Institute of Condensed Matter Chemistry in Bordeaux, France. In her professorial duties, she serves as a senior editor for Accounts of Materials Research for the American Chemical Society and on advisory editorial boards for leading journals.
