Yanghe Liu is an Assistant Professor at the University of Calgary's School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape. He is a trained planner and computer engineer, leveraging artificial intelligence in urban analytics to inform planning and the design of smart cities. His current research focuses on autonomous transit in U.S. communities, with a long-term interest in augmenting and automating the planning design process through generative AI. Yanghe has also engaged in practice with UN-Habitat’s Global Future Cities Initiative and has worked on planning projects in Southeast Asia and Africa, as well as historic redevelopment projects in Virginia and the Washington, D.C. region. He holds a PhD in Urban Planning and a Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Florida, a Master of City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies from the University of California, Berkeley. Outside of academia, he has completed four full marathons and enjoys creating “old-school” freehand urban sketches.
