Dr. Yanliu Lin

Biography

Yanliu Lin is an Associate Professor at Utrecht University in the Department of Human Geography and Spatial Planning. He has a long-standing commitment to interdisciplinary innovative research addressing complex governance problems and sustainability challenges. His current research focuses on digital planning, collaborative planning, and planning support science, with applications in urban regeneration, cultural heritage preservation, environmental management, climate adaptation, and nature-based solutions. Dr. Lin examines how digital technologies, such as planning support systems and artificial intelligence, interact with planning governance processes in diverse local contexts and how these technologies shape power dynamics in planning practices. His methodological approach employs innovative mixed-methods combining qualitative techniques and data analytics. He has been awarded an ERC Starting Grant to establish a research team focused on Collaborative Planning in Urban Regeneration and Environmental Management in the context of digitalization in China. He collaborates on projects developing AI-driven solutions for sustainable infrastructure and has published over 70 articles in internationally recognized journals. Furthermore, he has served as a guest editor and organized various international conferences on digital planning and sustainable urban futures.
