Biography

Yannick van den Brink is a full professor of Criminal Law at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and has been the Head of the Department of Criminal Law since July 2024. He specializes in youth criminal law, criminology, children's rights, and human rights, with a focus on fundamental rights and decision-making in youth justice. His multidisciplinary research approach has led to a four-year project funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) investigating inequality in youth justice decision-making from 2024 to 2027. Previously, he was an associate professor at VU Amsterdam and an NWO Rubicon Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge, where he conducted comparative studies on remand decision-making. Van den Brink has also worked as a visiting researcher at various esteemed institutions, including Northwestern University School of Law and the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law. His academic journey includes earning a cum laude bachelor's degree in Dutch Law and master's degrees in Criminal Law and Criminology from Utrecht University, and a Ph.D. from Leiden University. Alongside his academic role, he serves as a deputy judge at the District Court in The Hague.
