Biography

Yannis Stouraitis is a Senior Lecturer in Byzantine History at the University of Edinburgh. He completed his BA and MA in History at the University of Ioannina and went on to receive his PhD from the University of Vienna, where his thesis focused on Byzantine attitudes towards war and peace. With a career that spans several institutions including the University of Vienna and the Austrian Academy of Sciences, he joined the University of Edinburgh in January 2018. His research primarily delves into the social and cultural history of the Byzantine Empire from the 7th to the 15th centuries, particularly exploring the social aspects of warfare and the dynamics of civil wars within the Byzantine context. He is also interested in the historical memory construction and migration in the medieval Eastern Mediterranean. Yannis is the Director of the Centre for Late Antique, Islamic, and Byzantine Studies and serves as the Chief Editor of the Journal of Late Antique and Islamic Byzantine Studies. He supervises several PhD students on topics ranging from Byzantine identity to the dynamics of imperial decision-making in late Byzantium.
