Biography

Yannis C. Yortsos is the Dean of the USC Viterbi School of Engineering and holds the Zohrab Kaprielian Dean’s Chair in Engineering. He has been in this position since 2005, having previously served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs from 2001 to 2005. Yortsos joined the USC faculty of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering in 1978 and was the chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering from 1991 to 1997. His education includes a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, and both Master's and Doctoral degrees from the California Institute of Technology. His research focuses on fluid flow, transport, and reaction processes in porous media, with specific applications including subsurface fluid recovery and the engineering implications of the COVID-19 pandemic. Yortsos is a founding member of initiatives aimed at enhancing diversity in engineering education and has received numerous awards for his contributions, including the National Academy of Engineering’s Bernard M. Gordon Prize for Innovation in Engineering and Technology Education.
