Biography

Yannis C. Yortsos is the Dean of the USC Viterbi School of Engineering and holds the Zohrab Kaprielian Dean's Chair in Engineering, a position he has held since 2005. He joined USC's faculty in the Mork Family Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science in 1978. His academic background includes a Bachelor’s degree from the National Technical University of Athens and both a Master's and Doctorate from the California Institute of Technology. Yortsos has significantly contributed to the field of chemical and petroleum engineering with a focus on fluid flow and transport reaction processes in porous media, particularly in subsurface applications. He has been involved in various high-profile engineering initiatives, including the Grand Challenges Scholars Program and has served on multiple committees within the National Academy of Engineering. Yortsos is recognized as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and has received several prestigious awards throughout his career, including the 2022 National Academy Engineering Bernard M. Gordon Prize. His leadership in engineering diversity initiatives has impacted over 250 engineering schools nationwide.
