Biography

Yao Wang is a recognized expert in video coding, networked video applications, medical imaging, and computer vision. He joined the faculty of the Polytechnic Institute of New York University in 1990, becoming an assistant professor, then an associate professor in 1996, and a full professor in 2000. Dr. Wang holds a joint appointment in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of Biomedical Engineering at NYU Tandon School of Engineering, as well as an affiliated appointment in the Radiology Department of NYU School of Medicine. He has authored several influential textbooks and numerous journal articles, and has served as an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Multimedia and IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology. In 2004, he was elected a Fellow of IEEE for his contributions to video processing and communications. His accolades include the New York City Mayor’s Award for Excellence in Science & Technology in 2000, the IEEE Communications Society Leonard G. Abraham Prize Paper Award in 2004, and the IEEE Communications Society Multimedia Communication Technical Committee Paper Award in 2011. Wang has received multiple awards in China, including the Overseas Outstanding Young Investigator Award from the Natural Science Foundation in 2005 and the Yangtze River Lecture Scholar title by the Ministry of Education in 2007. He has been involved in significant research projects funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health, and leads research at NYU WIRELESS, an innovative center focusing on next-generation wireless technologies.
