Dr. Yaser Abu Mostafa

Biography

Yaser S. Abu-Mostafa is a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Cairo University in 1979, followed by a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1981, and he obtained his Ph.D. from Caltech in 1983. Dr. Abu-Mostafa has held various academic positions at Caltech, starting as an Assistant Professor in 1983, becoming an Associate Professor in 1989, and achieving the rank of Professor in 1994. His research encompasses the fields of machine learning, artificial intelligence, neural networks, and computational finance. He leads the Learning Systems Group at Caltech, focusing on the theoretical and application aspects of machine learning (ML). The group engages in diverse applications, including medical diagnostics, e-commerce, and computational finance, employing advanced techniques in neural networks to innovate and theorize new algorithms. Current projects include data-driven approaches to predicting the spread of COVID-19 and employing ML for low-resolution ultrasound diagnostics.
