Biography

Yasmiyn Irizarry is an Associate Professor in the Department of African and African Diaspora Studies at the University of Texas at Austin and the founding director of the Numbers 4 Justice Lab at the Institute of Urban Policy Research and Analysis. Irizarry is a quantitative sociologist, race scholar, and survey methodologist, renowned for her expertise in the emerging field of QuantCrit. Her research critically examines race and racism across four overlapping areas of inquiry: K-16 schooling contexts, categorization and identity, social attitudes and discrimination, and systems of justice and marginalization. She investigates the complex interplay of race, ethnicity, immigration, and class in relation to intersecting identities and power dynamics. Her scholarly work has been published in esteemed journals such as Educational Researcher and Sociology of Race and Ethnicity. Irizarry's research has also been featured in notable outlets like the Washington Post and Scientific American. She has received funding from prestigious organizations, including the National Science Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Irizarry holds a BA from Ohio State University and both an MA and PhD in Sociology from Indiana University.
