Biography

Yassine El Hiani is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at Dalhousie University. His research program critically examines the role of ion channels in cellular response to oxidative stress and their implications in cancer biology. Utilizing electrophysiological and molecular-based assays, Dr. El Hiani studies the activity of ion channels in response to oxidative stress, aiming to uncover their involvement in metabolism, metastasis, survival, and chemoresistance in malignant cells. His investigations seek to identify primary ion channel sensors of oxidative stress, providing molecular insights into downstream signaling pathways and enhancing current anticancer therapies. His research interests also extend to structural changes influencing CFTR and SLC26A9 anion channel gating, addressing their contributions to cystic fibrosis. He frequently collaborates with his students in publishing research findings and guiding them in their academic endeavors.
