Biography

Yasuko Kanno is a professor in the Wheelock College of Education & Human Development at Boston University, specializing in language education and applied linguistics. With a focus on the educational experiences of immigrant English learners, Kanno interrogates the systemic marginalization of multilingual students within K–12 educational frameworks. Her work aims to promote educational equity for diverse populations in Greater Boston, where she collaborates closely with local schools. As an ethnographer, she teaches qualitative research methods while also engaging in secondary data analysis. Before joining Boston University, she served as an associate professor and program coordinator for the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program at Temple University. Kanno's research includes a notable publication titled "English Learners’ Access to Postsecondary Education: College and Career Ready" (Multilingual Matters, 2021), which examines the transitions of English learners from high school to higher education. She is also an editorial board member of the American Educational Research Journal and a recipient of the 2015 TESOL Distinguished Research Award.
