Yayuan Liu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. His research group focuses on the interface of chemical engineering, materials science, and electrochemistry to advance energy and environmental sustainability. They design and synthesize materials at the molecular and microscopic level and develop novel electrochemical processes utilizing functional materials. Liu’s research includes investigating redox-active materials for carbon capture and utilization, creating molecularly precise electrochemical interfaces for separations and water remediation, and developing imaging platforms that visualize electrochemical processes with high temporal and spatial resolution. Liu received his Bachelor's degree in Materials Science and Engineering in 2014 from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, where he was awarded the Lee Kuan Yew Gold Medal for academic excellence. He earned his PhD in 2019 from Stanford University under the guidance of Professor Yi Cui. Following his doctoral studies, Liu completed postdoctoral training at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with Professor T. Alan Hatton. He has been recognized with numerous accolades, including the NSF CAREER Award and the Packard Fellowship, and was named an Innovator 35 by MIT Technology Review.
