Biography

Yazmín M. Crespo-Claudio is a Puerto Rican architect, historian, and educator with twenty years of teaching and practice in Puerto Rico, the United States, and Spain. Her transdisciplinary work spans practice, theory, and art, exploring architectural cultural counter-narratives and collective, affective, multimodal experiences. She focuses on architecture as a relational practice that emphasizes care, inclusivity, and resistance, foregrounding interdependence and archipelagic thought. Crespo-Claudio's scholarship examines the intersections of architecture, education, gender, and territory, highlighting pedagogical experiments alongside research in architectural histories and theories of the Americas and the Caribbean. She is a co-founder and director of the award-winning collective Taller Creando Sin Encargos (tCSE), dedicated to socially engaged, participatory, and decolonial design for urban justice. Her work challenges socio-territorial inequalities and recovers community knowledge often excluded from the global architectural discourse. In addition to her collective’s achievements, she has taught history and theory seminars, design studios, and critical spatial practices rooted in Caribbean decolonial frameworks at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She previously served as a Lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and as the Director of the Department of Architecture at Universidad Ana G. Méndez in Puerto Rico. Crespo-Claudio's work has been recognized nationally and internationally, contributing to dialogues on feminist practices, Caribbean spatial theories, and socially engaged architecture.
