Biography

Yelena Furman is a Lecturer in the Department of Slavic, East European & Eurasian Languages & Cultures at the University of California, Los Angeles. She earned her Ph.D. in Slavic Languages and Literatures from UCLA in 2004, and also holds an M.A. from the University of Washington and a B.A. from Stanford University. Her research focuses on contemporary Russian women’s writing, Russian-American fiction, and comparative literature. Furman's work is particularly informed by feminist postcolonial theory, exploring themes in writing and translation related to prominent authors such as Virginia Woolf and Fyodor Dostoevsky. She teaches a range of literature courses including Women in Russian Literature, the Great Russian Novel, and 20th Century Russian Literature, as well as language courses for beginning and intermediate Russian students. Furman actively works to connect her students with rich cultural contexts of Russian literature, emphasizing writing and the role of women in literary traditions.
