Biography

Y. Shaya Fainman is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the Technion, Israel, in 1979 and 1983, respectively. He directs the Ultrafast Nanoscale Optics group at UCSD and has made pioneering contributions in the fields of applied optics, nano-photonics, and optical signal processing. His research applications target information technologies and biomedical sensing. Over the years, Fainman has led significant projects, including the Photonic Imaging Networks and DARPA's OptoCenters programs. He is currently the Deputy Director of the NSF’s Engineering Research Center for Integrated Access Networks (CIAN). He is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers. He has received several prestigious awards, including the Miriam Aharon Gutvirt Prize and the Lady Davis Fellowship.
