Biography

Yi Gu is an associate professor specializing in modern and contemporary art and visual culture, with a focus on Asia, particularly China. His current research interests center around the agrarian imaginary, extractive regimes, and historical socialism. His work investigates the epistemic shifts in perception, landscape, and nation-building, as well as Chinese photography. His book, "Chinese Ways of Seeing: Open-Air Painting" (Harvard University Press Asia Center, 2020), discusses the ocular turn in China's twentieth century and provides a revisionist history of modern Chinese art. He is also completing a manuscript on socialist data visualization in the context of China’s contemporary Digital Countryside initiative. Additionally, Gu serves as co-editor for the open-access academic journal "Trans Asia Photography" and is a convening member of the research project "Alternative Collections Digital Humanities: Twentieth-Century Chinese Art Visual Culture."
