Dr. Yi Qiu

Biography

Yi Qiu is an Associate Professor at the University of Southampton specializing in biodynamics and vehicle seating dynamics. He earned his BSc in Mechanical Engineering in 1982 and an MSc in Vibration Engineering in 1985. He began his academic career as a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at Southwest Jiaotong University in China and later worked as a Research Engineer at the National Research Institute of Construction Machinery, focusing on heavy vehicle seating dynamics. Yi has received several awards for his research, including the Outstanding Young Scientist from the Ministry of Machinery Electronics and the Tianjin Young Scientist Award. After serving as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Sheffield, he completed his PhD on nonlinear material constitutive modeling and finite element analysis. His career includes postdoctoral research at Imperial College London and roles in the automotive industry, including consulting for Jaguar Land Rover. He re-joined the University of Southampton as a lecturer in 2007 and has been involved in various research projects related to vehicle dynamics and ride comfort, with a particular interest in combined human-seat modeling and vibration transmission.
