Dr. Yi Zheng

Biography

Professor Yi Zheng specializes in comparative literature and cultural studies, focusing on modern Chinese literature and the comparative aesthetic history between Chinese and European contexts. His doctoral thesis explored the aesthetic politics in Romanticism during late 18th to early 19th century Europe and early twentieth century China, aiming to redeem the crisis-ridden narratives of modern history through transgressive poetic imagination. Zheng has extended his intellectual-historical concerns through postdoctoral work on China’s cultural transformation in the post-reform period, examining the interplay between classical traditions and popular culture. His research encompasses spatial modern Chinese fiction, genre development, and radical poetics, while his training in comparative transnational studies underlines the importance of cultural translations and the movement of ideas. He has published articles in renowned journals including Boundary 2 and Modern Chinese Literature and Culture, as well as contributed chapters to scholarly collections like the Oxford Handbook of Modernisms. As a supervisor, he guides PhD, MA, and Honours students in Chinese and comparative literary and cultural studies.
