Dr. Yiannis Demiris

Biography

Yiannis Demiris is a Professor of Human-Centred Robotics at Imperial College London, where he holds the Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies focused on Personal Assistive Robotics. He established the Personal Robotics Laboratory in 2001. Yiannis holds a PhD in Intelligent Robotics and a BSc (Hons) in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science from the University of Edinburgh. He has been recognized as a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (FIET) and the British Computer Society (FBCS). Demiris's research centers on the field of Artificial Intelligence, particularly in the development of interactive 'human-in-the-loop' systems, which foster intelligent robotics capable of providing personalized assistance to humans. His innovative work also includes exploring fundamental algorithms for intelligent perception and user modeling, as well as cognitive control architectures. He participates in international research collaborations focusing on advanced applications like multimodal brain-machine interfaces, intelligent manipulation robots, and the socio-technical aspects of robotic systems. His teaching emphasizes hands-on robotics and machine learning applications in healthcare. Yiannis's contributions to education have been acknowledged through various awards, including the Rector's Award for Teaching Excellence and the President's Award for Excellence in Research Supervision.
