Biography

Yifan Zheng is a historian of ancient China specializing in social and legal institutional history during the early Chinese empires. His research examines legal and administrative practices that shaped the lives and identities of individuals across the social spectrum during the Warring States, Qin, and Han periods, with particular attention to marginalized groups in frontier regions. Yifan joined the History Department in Autumn 2025 after serving as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the National University of Singapore. He has also been a visiting scholar at Kyoto University in 2019 and Yuelu Academy in 2021. His future research plans involve integrating geographical, economic, and environmental factors into his work to extend the chronological scope to the early medieval period, thereby developing a broader and more comprehensive understanding of ancient Chinese history.
