Biography

Yilan Liu joined the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Waterloo as an Assistant Professor in 2023. Her research focuses on synthetic biology to provide sustainable development solutions, emphasizing functional probiotics that offer affordable and preventive health solutions and engineering bacteria for the upcycling of mixed solid waste. She obtained her Master of Natural Science from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and then pursued a PhD in Biochemical Engineering there. Following her doctorate, she completed post-doctoral training at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Toronto. In addition to her assistant professorship, she has contributed to various research fellowships, demonstrating her expertise in biomanufacturing and environmental biotechnology. In her lab, she actively works on projects aimed at utilizing genetic tools and dynamic bioprocess regulation to advance the field of synthetic biology.
