Dr. Yiming Ying

Biography

Yiming Ying is a tenured Professor at the University of Sydney, joining in December 2023. He earned his PhD in Mathematics from Zhejiang University in 2002 and completed postdoctoral training in Machine Learning at CityU Hong Kong and UCL in the UK. Before his position at the University of Sydney, he was a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Exeter from 2010 to 2014. Ying has received notable honors including the University of Exeter Merit Award in 2012 and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Activities at SUNY Albany in 2022. His research is primarily focused on Statistical Learning Theory, Machine Learning, Optimisation in Machine Learning, and Trustworthy AI, aiming to address statistical challenges in modern data analysis and applying machine learning methods to solve real-world problems, including cancer informatics for early detection. He is also a founding director of the UAlbany Machine Learning Group and serves as an associate editor for several machine learning journals. His projects have received funding from multiple prestigious sources including the Australian Research Council and the National Science Foundation.
