Biography

Ying Chen is a Lecturer in Surface Engineering at the University of Manchester, having completed her PhD in Coatings and Ceramics at the same institution in November 2015. She holds a Master's degree from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and an undergraduate degree from Zhengzhou University. Following her PhD, she worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Manchester from November 2015 to October 2018 before joining OxMet Technologies as an Alloy Development Engineer. In September 2019, she returned to the University of Manchester as a Rolls-Royce Research Fellow and became a lecturer in January 2024. With over 80 published peer-reviewed papers, she actively leads research funded by EPSRC and engages in international conferences, showcasing her expertise in advanced coating technologies and surface engineering solutions for demanding environments. Ying has developed a strong research group focused on microstructural design and the mechanistic understanding of advanced ceramic coatings, particularly in relation to fracture behavior and thermal degradation under extreme conditions.
