Biography

Ying Gu is a Professor and Associate Department Head for Graduate Education in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Penn State University. She received her PhD in Plant Genetics from the University of California-Riverside, where her research significantly advanced the molecular understanding of polar growth in pollen tubes and pavement cells. After her doctoral work, she conducted postdoctoral research at Stanford University and served as an associate specialist at the University of California Berkeley. In 2010, she established her own lab at Penn State, becoming a vital participant in the 'Center for Lignocellulose Structure Formation' as part of an Energy Frontier Research Center. Gu's research focuses on molecular mechanisms of cellulose biosynthesis, utilizing biochemical and genetic methodologies to elucidate how cellulose, a major biopolymer, is synthesized and regulated. Her long-term goal is to contribute to the creation of new cellulosic materials for varied industrial applications, thereby supporting sustainable practices. She has received several accolades for her contributions, including the Daniel R. Tershak Memorial Teaching Award and roles on the editorial boards of notable journals such as Plant Direct and Frontiers in Plant Physiology.
