Yiping W. Han is a world-renowned expert in microbial sciences, particularly focusing on host-pathogen interactions and translational studies. He has pioneered research elucidating the role of oral microbiota in systemic complications such as pregnancy issues and cancer, coining the term 'mobile microbiome.' His laboratory has demonstrated that oral bacteria can translocate to extra-oral sites, causing adverse pregnancy outcomes and stimulating gastrointestinal cancers. Han has been an inventor on multiple issued patents and is an elected Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology in 2022. He currently serves as President of the Anaerobe Society of the Americas and as President-Elect of the Sino-Micro Group. In addition to his research, he has lectured extensively and served on several editorial boards, including as Editor for mBio. He holds BS and MS degrees in Microbiology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as well as a PhD in Microbiology from the same institution, with postdoctoral training at UCLA. His research interests include host-pathogen interactions, the human microbiome, and their implications for health and disease.
