Biography

Yiping Xia is an assistant professor in the Department of Communication and Journalism at Texas A&M University. He is a media sociologist interested in the sociotechnical study of journalism and digital media. Using primarily qualitative, interpretive methodologies, he has conducted and published research on topics such as everyday news engagement, shifting journalistic norms in the digital era, and online political disinformation. Dr. Xia examines how individuals, particularly those from diasporic or otherwise marginalized communities, navigate the contemporary news ecosystem. He is currently working on a book project, tentatively titled 'Becoming Audiences: Everyday Life Shapes News Engagement,' based on fieldwork he conducted within the Chinese community in Toronto, Canada. Dr. Xia earned his PhD in Mass Communication from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with minors in Sociology and Science and Technology Studies (STS). Before joining Texas A&M, he was a postdoctoral research associate at the Center for Information, Technology, and Public Life (CITAP) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
