Biography

Yiren Zhao's research focuses on large-scale Generative AI systems, exploring the interplay between hardware and algorithms to enhance run-time efficiency and security for large-scale AI workloads in computer systems. His work involves the automatic co-design of AI systems, aiming to provide a unified representation for software-defined machine learning and heterogeneous system exploration. His team at the DeepWok Research Lab, which he leads, focuses on exploring new cross-stack acceleration opportunities by re-designing algorithms and renovating hardware architectures to improve the efficiency of AI workloads. His interests also extend to projects involving unstructured multimodal data, graphs, and hypergraphs, with a focus on generating AI systems from diverse data types beyond simple images and text. Additionally, Zhao examines the algorithmic aspects of efficient AI, covering areas such as efficient training, inference, model search, and deployment of state-of-the-art Generative AI models, including language diffusion models. Since joining Imperial College London in 2022, he has secured over £5 million in funding from industry partners and government bodies.
