Biography

Yishi Jin is the Junior Seau Foundation Endowed Chair in Traumatic Brain Injury and a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Neurobiology at the University of California, San Diego. His research focuses on the molecular genetic mechanisms that underlie the development and function of the nervous system, primarily using the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans. This organism's defined anatomy and rapid life cycle allow for subcellular resolution studies, where Jin's lab investigates key molecules involved in synapse formation and maintenance, as well as adult axon regeneration. His work combines forward genetic screening with multi-layered molecular and cellular manipulations to uncover conserved roles in neuronal repair and understand human neurological disorders. Jin has identified multiple signaling pathways critical for synapse development and has illuminated the roles of various proteins in regulating the structural dynamics of neural circuits. His ongoing research aims to advance knowledge on intrinsic signaling pathways, to develop new strategies that could enhance the regrowth ability of injured axons, leveraging innovative optogenetic tools in the process.
