Biography

Yiyin Erin Chen is the Robert Swanson (1969) Career Development Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, within the Department of Biology. Her research focuses on how microbes educate the immune system and engineering microbial therapeutics for human diseases. She investigates the communication between commensal microbes that inhabit human bodies and the immune system, particularly through the lens of skin, which is the largest organ. By employing microbial genetics, immunologic approaches, and mouse models, she aims to dissect the molecular signals that microbes utilize to influence immune responses and how microbial communities can alter these responses. Ultimately, her goal is to harness microbe-host interactions to engineer novel vaccines and therapeutics.
