Dr. Yo Ichiro Hakomori

Biography

Yo-Ichiro Hakomori is a Professor of Practice and Director of Global Studies at the University of Southern California's School of Architecture. He is the founder and principal of StudioHAU, which he established in 2016. His design research focuses on the intersection of architecture, natural environments, and sustainability, creating spaces that are aesthetically timeless and environmentally responsive. Prior to starting StudioHAU, he was a founding partner at Architecture and worked on significant projects including the Tyler Museum of Art, Pomona College Studio Art Hall, and the Grand Rapids Art Museum. He has collaborated with Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando on several notable residential projects. Hakomori's current work is significantly influenced by California Modernism and aims to harmoniously blend architectural forms with natural surroundings. He plays an integral role in developing Global Studies programs at USC, with particular emphasis on study abroad initiatives in Mexico, Latin America, and the Mediterranean. Hakomori teaches courses that explore sustainable design practices and encourages students to apply energy-efficient solutions in their design projects. He has received recognition for his dedication to artistic expression and sustainable design, including the USC 2021 Associates Award for his work on the Grand Rapids Art Museum, which is notable for being the world's LEED Gold certified art museum.
