Biography

Yong Chen is a professor in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Southern California (USC). He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2001. Prior to joining USC in 2006, he was a senior research and development engineer at 3D Systems Inc., playing a key role in the advancement of the 3D printing industry. His research focuses on additive manufacturing, especially at the micro and meso scales, and includes modeling, analyzing, synthesizing, and optimizing digital design and manufacturing processes. Dr. Chen has authored over 180 publications in refereed journals and conferences, receiving several best paper awards. Numerous honors mark his career, including the National Science Foundation CAREER Award in 2012 and the Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers in 2008. Furthermore, he has been recognized as a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). At USC, he teaches courses related to design and manufacturing for both undergraduate and graduate students, and he actively engages students in the startup ecosystem related to 3D printing.
