Biography

Yongtaek Kim is an Associate Professor in the Korean Program at the School of Modern Languages at Georgia Tech. He received his PhD in Linguistics from the University of Oregon in 2009 and joined Georgia Tech in 2017. His research focuses on the interrelation of perception and the external world as it pertains to the construal of event structure in a conceptualized world, as well as linguistic encoding. He specializes in contrastive linguistics between Korean and Japanese, employing cognitive and historical linguistic approaches. His teaching spans various levels of Korean language courses and topics related to Korean history, media, culture, and society. Yongtaek Kim's excellence in teaching has been recognized multiple times, leading to his inclusion in the Class of 1934 CIOS Honor Roll. He served on the Fulbright U.S. Student Program National Screening Committee in 2021. His teaching interests include instructional technologies and foreign language acquisition while his research interests also focus on Korean Linguistics and East-Asian studies, particularly in cinema and digital mixed media. His work emphasizes the intersection of language with popular culture.
