Biography

Yoshinori Tanokura is a visiting associate professor at the Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton University, specializing in theater and scenic design. Originally from Tokyo, he holds an M.A. in Scenography from Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design in London and an M.F.A. in Set Design from the University of Connecticut. Tanokura is an accomplished freelance designer with notable design credits that include 'Moon Buffalo' at People’s Light & Theatre, 'Clever Lies' by Joe DiPietro at Westside Theatre in New York City, and 'Exonerated' at the Delaware Theatre Company. His work on 'Peter and the Starcatcher' at the Adrienne Arsht Center was also well-received. In 2015, he was honored with a Carbonell Award for Scenic Design. Tanokura has collaborated with John Lee Beatty on several Broadway productions, including 'Venus', 'Doubt', and 'The Color Purple'. Currently, he teaches scenic design at Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ, where he also offers study abroad programs. Recently, he co-directed an interdisciplinary performance titled 'Desiderium' at Teatro della Pergola in Florence, Italy, which was part of a meeting with European theatre academies. He is a member of United Scenic Artists, Local 829.
