Youming Zhang is an Assistant Professor in Respiratory Genomics at the National Heart & Lung Institute within Imperial College London. He trained as a physician at Tong Ji Medical University in China, obtaining further clinical research training with a Master's degree in Medicine from Peking Union Medical College. He has worked as a Clinical Research Fellow in Pediatrics at Beijing Children’s Hospital and was awarded the K.C. Wong scholarship by the ORS at the University of Oxford, which facilitated his DPhil studies at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics. His doctoral research focused on mapping quantitative trait loci (QTL) related to asthma in mice. Upon completing his DPhil in 1999, he began positional cloning of asthma loci on human chromosome 13, successfully cloning the PHF11/SETDB2 genes associated with asthma. In 2006, he was appointed as a Research Council UK Fellow at Imperial College London, where he developed an autonomous asthma genetics program involving mice and humans. His current work investigates the functions of novel genes in respiratory diseases using cutting-edge genomic approaches. He leads a research group that defines the roles of genetic polymorphisms and employs various genomic techniques to explore the pathways of these novel genes in disease pathophysiology. Additionally, Dr. Zhang is involved in academic tutoring for MBBS students and leads a module on Pharmacogenomics for the MSc course of Genomic Medicine at the National Heart & Lung Institute, Imperial College London.
