Biography

Professor Young-Jin Cha received his PhD in 2008 from Texas A&M University in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He also obtained an MSc from Yonsei University in 2004 and a BEng from Kumoh National Institute of Technology in 2002. Following his doctorate, Dr. Cha began a post-doctoral fellowship at the City College of New York, then furthered his research as a post-doctoral associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) before joining the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Manitoba in 2014. His research focuses on structural health monitoring, deep learning applications in civil engineering, and the development of autonomous UAVs for infrastructure monitoring. Dr. Cha has received significant research funding totaling $1.2M and has over 100 peer-reviewed publications. In 2021, he was awarded the Merit Award for Research, Scholarly Work and Creative Activities by the University of Manitoba. He continues to be recognized internationally for his contributions to smart materials and structures, as highlighted by the 2022 International Association of Advanced Materials Scientist Award and his editorial work in various top-tier journals.
