Biography

Young Hwang is an Associate Professor specializing in Molecular Medicine at the Singapore Institute of Technology. He holds a PhD in Molecular Medicine from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and has a Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Science) with Honours. His research interests focus on metabolic engineering of microbes for biochemical production, development of biosensors, and creating genetic toolboxes for microbial systems. He is also engaged in reprogramming probiotics and commensal microbes for therapeutic applications, as well as mammalian cell engineering for bioproduction. He is actively working on projects to combat amebiasis through a combination of natural probiotics and engineered bacteria, and has participated in past projects related to microalgae for carbon capture applications and engineering commensal microbes to influence neurohormonal balance. He has collaborated with Thermo Fisher Scientific to enhance mammalian protein production and has been involved in various grants and research initiatives.
