Professor Tai's research uses Semiconductor/MEMS/NEMS technologies for medical applications. He built the Caltech MEMS Laboratory, an 8,000-square-foot facility completely dedicated to medical devices. This facility consists of a clean-room lab, a CAD lab, a measurement/test/metrology lab, and a biological lab, supporting researchers such as graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and visiting scholars in developing innovative MEMS/NEMS medical devices. Over the past 20 years, Professor Tai has launched major research efforts in medical devices, with project examples including HPLC-on-a-chip, blood-labs-on-a-chip, and wireless micro drug delivery. His group also focuses on miniature micro implants, collaborating with medical doctors and biologists from institutions such as UCSF, USC, and UCLA to develop integrated implants for cortical, retinal, and spinal applications.
Most Caltech graduate programs are PhD-only. GRE General and Subject tests vary by department; many have made them optional or no longer accept them.
