Biography

Yu-Hua Tseng is a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and the Principal Investigator at the Joslin Diabetes Center. Her research focuses on the mechanisms regulating energy balance and developing potential therapies for obesity-related diseases. With an emphasis on the role of adipose tissue in obesity and insulin resistance, Tseng’s laboratory studies the distinct types of fat in mammals, particularly the differentiation of brown adipose tissue and its function in thermogenesis and energy expenditure. Her work has led to the discovery that bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) 7 specifically promotes the differentiation of brown adipocytes. By utilizing a combination of cellular, molecular, and physiological approaches, her lab aims to deepen the understanding of BMPs and their roles in adipogenesis and energy metabolism. Through this research, she also explores the concept of adipogenic progenitors and their potential in novel obesity therapies.
