Biography

Yu Xie is the Bert G. Kerstetter '66 University Professor in Sociology with a faculty appointment at the Princeton Institute of International and Regional Studies, Princeton University. He previously served as the Otis Dudley Duncan Distinguished University Professor of Sociology, Statistics, and Public Policy at the University of Michigan for 26 years, and was a research professor at the Population Studies Center within Michigan's Institute for Social Research. His main research interests include social stratification, demography, statistical methods, Chinese studies, and the sociology of science. Among his notable publications are 'Marriage Cohabitation' (University of Chicago Press, 2007), co-authored with Arland Thornton and William Axinn; 'Statistical Methods for Categorical Data Analysis' (Emerald, 2008), co-authored with Daniel Powers; and 'American Science Decline?' (Harvard University Press, 2012), co-authored with Alexandra Killewald. Xie is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and Academia Sinica, as well as the National Academy of Sciences. His appointment is part of a university initiative to deepen the regional studies curriculum within the social sciences.
